Education Courses

We offer a range of education and training courses to members and new members over each surf season. Your SRC & Bronze Medallion are the starting points (depending on age) of becoming a lifesaver however there are a range of other awards you can obtain to further enhance your lifesaving qualifications.

SLSWA also run FREE first aid courses for Club members. Details on these courses can be found at the bottom of this page!


Bronze Medallion: Cost $240 existing | $300 new (New members will receive a $50 membership credit on achieving 20 rostered patrol hours for the 2024/25 season).

This is the core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia and after the successful competition of this course you will have the skills and knowledge in order to be able to participate in Surf Life Saving patrol operations.

To commence training for the Bronze Medallion you must:

  • Be a financial member of Cottesloe SLSC;

  • Be at least 15 years of age on the final assessment date;

  • Complete an unaided swim of 400 m in 9 minutes or less (goggles and masks permitted) in a swimming pool of not less than 25 m


Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC): Cost $80 | $100 new (New members will receive a $20 membership credit on achieving 20 rostered patrol hours for the 2024/25 season).

The SRC is a stepping stone towards gaining a Bronze Medallion Award for members under 15 years of age (must be 13 yrs at date of assessment). It is also the perfect pathway for parents/guardians who wish to assist with water safety during nipper programs, sports carnivals or training.

The SRC course provides participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. An annual proficiency check must be undertaken for this Award to remain current. 


Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART) Courses: Cost Free

Nipper Rescue Certificate (NRC): Cost $FREE

The Nipper Rescue Certificate is a water safety and rescue award for the provision of water safety for Nipper activities The course is designed to enable parents / guardians to assist with improving the delivery of Nipper water based activities.

The course covers: Signals, Surf Awareness, Aquatic Rescues & OHS

Course Information

·        Pre-requisite pool swim of 200m in under 5 minutes

·        The course requires a 200m ocean swim in under 6 minutes

·        Annual proficiency test is required to maintain award

As a member of Surf Life Saving WA, you have access to a range of benefits including FREE first aid training. The only requirement to access this training is that you are a current financial member of a Western Australian Surf Life Saving Club!
