Club Marathon will be run THIS Sunday 12th December

The Club Marathon will be run on Sunday 12th December with registrations from 9.30am in the courtyard for a 10.30am start. Members competing must be financial and wear a Club comp cap.

The Gaston Marathon Cup is a run/swim/run/swim/run commencing in the Club courtyard. Competitors will first run to the beach, then hit the water for a 800m swim, this is followed by a 2k run to Grant Street (North of North Cott) which ends back in the courtyard before competitors will finish with a 'stubby stakes' type run/swim/run, again concluding back in the courtyard.

Winners must have also completed five (5) club swims this season. Normal Club swim points will also be awarded for all swimmers participating/starting the race. If running isn't your thing, you can just swim and you'll still score a point for taking part.

This trophy was originally called the Spark Cup and won by Cottesloe at a Geraldton Carnival in the 1930s. In 1940 Life Members, Alex Prior and Bruce Gaston commenced the Club Marathon and Bruce Gaston sponsored and won the inaugural event in 1940 and again in 1941. The trophy continues to be named after Bruce.

The first course commenced on the beach in front of the Cottesloe Hotel with competitors running out along the jetty, diving off and swimming around the pylon to shore, run to Grant Street and return. Other members can remember the course, being a run down the Mudrup rock cliffs, running out onto the groyne and diving in!
